Single people often think they don't need life insurance, and in many cases, they are right. However, there are many factors that determine your need for life insurance; marital status is just one.
First of all, do you have any dependents? If you have children, or if you provide support for a parent or grandparent, your death could create a serious financial hardship for these dependents. Life insurance can provide a continued stream of income for your loved ones if you die prematurely. It can also provide peace of mind for you, knowing that they will be taken care of when you're gone.
Washington
The House vote to pass the House committee bill designed to overhaul the nation's suffering health care system received high praise from President Obama on Sunday calling it "historic", and saying that it is now time for the Senate to do its part complete the work.
Don't panic. Chances are you're still at least partially covered. Most states have established "guaranty associations" or "guaranty funds" that cover life insurance company failures; in much the same way as the FDIC covers bank failures.
Although the coverage provided by a guaranty association or guaranty fund is limited (typically $300,000 for auto, home, and life insurance policies) and depends upon the financial resources of the guaranty association, in most cases it should prevent you from being left completely without protection if your life insurance company goes belly-up.
Now that the House has passed the health care reform bill it is up to the Senate to follow through. There was one House Republican who supported the bill. His name is Representative Anh Cao, who told CNN on Sunday that he needed to the needs of his district before the desires of his party.
In fact Cao's vote was not required to get the bill passed by the House, but it did give House Speaker Nancy Pelosi the opportunity to talk about bipartisan support for this controversial measure.
